About me:

I have been tutoring and teaching mathematics at the collegiate level since 1985 when I started working as a tutor my first semester at Austin Community College. I continued to tutor all during my undergraduate years, and upon graduating in December of 1991 I immediately began teaching at the same community college where I had started as a student.

Since then I have taught in Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Ridgecrest, California, and now in South East Washington at Yakima Valley College.

I earned my Master’s Degree from California State University, Northridge while I was teaching in the Developmental Mathematics department. The majority of my teaching has been in urban areas and at community colleges and I appreciate the diverse student body that I work with. Having students of different ages and backgrounds has made me a better teacher.

Research and Creative interests

My thesis, Numerical Analysis of Apportionment Methods, (http://scholarworks.csun.edu/handle/10211.3/144575) dealt with how to quantify three different ways of evaluating the fairness of an apportionment methods, the methodology of choosing the number of representatives that each state has in the US Congress. My thesis advisor, Dr. Michael Neubauer, and I published an extension of my Thesis “A Proposal for Apportioning the House,” (http://www.jstor.org/stable/40984487?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents) under my married name Margo Grace Gartner. I enjoyed working in Applied Mathematics, combining my interests in Political Science and Mathematics.

I don’t feel called to continue research in Apportionment, I do want to work in collaboration with colleagues in other fields. Working as an adjunct lecturer I have not had opportunities to pursue my interests, but I look forward to being part of a community where I can contribute, especially with the education of first generation college students, returning students, and students who are coming to college with deficits in their pre-college education.

I would also like to research ways to improve developmental courses, employing both my 25 years of experience and research that has been done regarding andragogy. I am looking at getting my PhD in Education with this research.

I am a prospective member of the Optimist Club of Ridgecrest, and have been recruited to be on their STEM outreach committee.

In the small town where I live now I have been active in the community theater. Acting in several plays including Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and Othello, as well as working back stage with costumes and props. I am also the former treasurer of the Ridgecrest Community Theatre Troupe (RCTT).
