Worksheet Example 2 - Exponential Notation

Give an example of exponential notation.

What are the parts of your example? (There are two terms we use to describe exponential notation, determine which number is which.)

Write out in English how you would read your example.

What is the meaning of your expression?

Evaluate your example.

Take your example and replace the base with x.

Now, evaluate the above expression when

            x = 3

            x = -3

Was there a difference in your answers? Why do you think that is?

(Book problems that are associated with this)

The Product Rule

Use the definition of exponential notation to simplify

            x4 × x6

Is there a shortcut for what you did above?

Write a general Product Rule.

The Quotient Rule

Use the definition of exponential notation to simplify

            x7 / x4

Is there a shortcut for what you did above?

Write a general Quotient Rule.

The Zero Exponent

Use the definition of exponential notation to simplify

            x4 / x4

Use the Quotient Rule to simplify

            x4 / x4

Write a general rule for how to deal with the zero exponent.

Does the zero exponent rule work for every number?
